How long has Halloween been celebrated? Halloween was started over 2000 years ago by the Celts. They didn't call it Halloween it was just a party before the end of summer. They wore Costumes made of animal heads and skins. Their celebration was for their deities and to help ward of the spirits of the dead that returned to earth.
The Romans then occupied that lands after conquering the Celts and the Romans celebrated a day in late October to the passing of the dead. By the 800's the Pope had declared Nov. 1st to be Saints day, it is believed the Pope was trying to replace the Celts festival. the pope called Saints day All-hallows.
